By April 15, 2016March 18th, 2019No Comments

Horse Classic will again be offered at the 2016 4-H Weekend on May 6th and 7th at the Dalhousie University, Faculty of Agriculture Campus in Bible Hill. Teams of four members enrolled in the light horse, miniature horse, draft horse, driving or horse basics projects are invited to participate in a variety of horse events. Horse Classic is a great opportunity for members to learn more about their project. We ask that you please forward this information along to all of your horse members. All members are encouraged to take part in other 4-H Weekend activities and can apply to stay in residence.

Interested teams must fill out and submit the enclosed form. There will be a maximum of eight teams and the selection will be based on the application deadline. However, the number of teams per county will also be taken into consideration. Team members are encouraged to be senior members (ages 14-21), however junior members (ages 9-13) are welcome to take part in the event also. Team members do not have to be from the same club, but every team member should notify their horse project leader to inform them they have applied. Counties may also combine team members if there are not enough members in one county. Enclosed are the team application form and a Horse Bowl question example. The team members’ application form must be submitted to the address provided on the application form by April 22nd, 2016 along with ten questions developed from the Nova Scotia Light Horse Leaders Guide, Nova Scotia Light Horse Project Regulations and Standards, the Vet Science Project Manual and 2016 Newsletter, the Light Horse Project Manual and 2016 Newsletter, Draft Horse Project Manual and 2016 Newsletter to be used in the Horse Bowl Competition, see attached example. Please note that the Draft Horse and Mini Horse Resources will be utilized as a resource for Horse Classic this year. Subsequent Horse Classic information will be sent to Member #1 on application form. Please print clearly on all application forms and question submission. A reference to the manual, page number, and paragraph number is also required so that judges can quickly check the source.

Horse Classic consists of four individual events, it includes:

  • Horse Bowl Competition – This competition will allow the 4-H Members to demonstrate their equine knowledge while educating other participants and With the use of a moderator, judges and time/scorekeeper, teams will be asked questions from the Nova Scotia 4-H Horse Resources, as listed above. After a set number of questions are asked, the team with the highest number of points is declared the game winner.
    • Marketing Competition PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGES TO THIS COMPETITION. This competition will allow team members to practice their communication and presentation skills and share with the judges the extent of their knowledge of horses. Teams will draw a scenario from a hat which they will present to a panel of judges their plan to care for and train their horse(s). The judges will determine which team has excelled in the presentations and had laid out the most comprehensive and realistic plan for their horse(s). Teams will be provided the scenario (horse breed, age, pedigree, history, ) and will then have 1 hour to prepare a 5 minute presentation of the member’s choice (digital presentation will be permitted, projector will be provided) and answer a maximum of 5 minutes of questions from the judges. To better prepare for the marketing presentation members are encouraged to review tips found in the 2016 General Leader’s Kit in regards to preparing and delivering a speech.
  • Quiz – The quiz will include short answer and multiple choice questions to be completed The quiz will include basic horse knowledge questions as members participating can be in any horse project.
